Seborrhea and Seborrheic Dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that predominantly affects areas rich in sebaceous (oil) glands, such as the scalp. It is characterized by the appearance of yellowish-white or white oily flakes, ranging from fine to thick and sticky, which cover the scalp and impair skin and hair health.
The dandruff is usually accompanied by signs of active inflammation: noticeable redness, intense itching, and a burning or painful sensation due to a disrupted skin barrier. The pathological mechanism of seborrhea involves a combination of increased sebum production and heightened response to the natural yeast fungus present on the scalp. When the fungus proliferates in sebum-rich conditions, it triggers an inflammatory reaction that disrupts the normal cycle of skin cell renewal.
Symptoms are variable and tend to worsen during periods of high stress, chronic fatigue, or seasonal changes. Targeted treatment from Dr. Sorbie focuses on controlling sebum, soothing inflammation, and restoring microbial balance, helping to reduce symptoms and significantly improve hair appearance and health.
Important: Seborrhea is not contagious. However, due to its chronic nature and tendency to flare periodically, regular and targeted care is required to balance sebum production, reduce inflammation, and prevent symptom recurrence.
Causes
- Genetic predisposition and autoimmune mechanisms (psoriasis)
- Stress and weakened immune system
- Unfavorable climatic conditions (dry or cold air)
- Incorrect care and aggressive cosmetic products, leading to chronic issues (seborrheic type)
- Mechanical damage to the scalp, combined with chronic background and genetic tendency toward seborrhea
Symptoms
- Thick patches and flakes on the scalp
- Itching, irritation, and redness with flaking resembling dandruff
- Dryness or oiliness of the scalp (depending on the type of seborrhea)
- Localized hair loss in severe cases due to the chronic condition
- Increased scalp sensitivity caused by persistent inflammation
