Scalp Psoriasis
Scalp psoriasis is a chronic condition in which the skin cell renewal process is abnormally accelerated. The result is the accumulation of thick scales (plaques) accompanied by itching, redness, and a feeling of tightness on the scalp. The itching and tightness damage the scalp, and hair may lose its volume and shine. This condition is not just temporary discomfort but causes exhausting symptoms that affect quality of life.
Important: Psoriasis is not contagious and can be effectively managed with specialized products that help relieve symptoms and maintain scalp health.
Main Causes Leading to Scalp Damage
- Genetic predisposition and stress: Psoriasis is a chronic genetic disease that can appear or worsen due to stress and immune suppression.
- Climate conditions: Cold and dry weather or air from air conditioners can worsen scalp condition, causing dryness and increased flaking.
- Incorrect care: Using aggressive hair care products not suited for skin problems can disrupt the scalp’s natural balance and create chronic issues.
- Mechanical damage: Aggressive combing, intense scratching, or improper scalp care can cause mechanical damage, especially if there is a genetic tendency to seborrhea.
Key Symptoms for Identifying the Problem
- Thick, flaky patches on the scalp
- Increased scalp sensitivity due to persistent inflammation
- Itching, irritation, and redness with flaking resembling dandruff
- Dry or oily scalp (depending on seborrhea type)
- Localized hair loss in severe cases due to chronic condition
Additional Symptoms
Accompanying symptoms include intense and persistent itching, pronounced redness, and a feeling of tightness and scalp discomfort. Constant scratching causes microscopic damage to the skin barrier, which can worsen inflammation.
Beyond physical discomfort, psoriasis directly affects hair appearance: inflamed and damaged scalp causes hair to lose natural volume, shine, and vitality, and in some cases may lead to thinning.
At Dr. Sorbie, we understand the complexity of dual care: soothing the scalp and restoring hair fiber.
